Alpilles nature park
Image of interior Provence, authentic, with style and refinement. It is the Provence of St Rémy de Provence, Baux de Provence … the country of writers Alphonse Daudet and Frédéric Mistral, it is also the country of Van Gogh who lived in St Rémy, inspired by its light, its sunflowers and its famous cypresses.
The Parc des Alpilles, created in 2007 is a territory rich in biodiversity mixing wetlands and dry spaces, shaped by more than 4,000 years of civilization. At the heart of the Alpilles chain, you will discover picturesque villages but also major archaeological sites such as the Caisses de Jean- Jean oppidum, the ancient site of Barbegal and the hypogeums of Fontvieille.
The magnificent Alpilles landscape will also appeal to visitors keen on beautiful walks, with its olive groves, vineyards, orchards, cypress hedges, scrubland and pine forests. The rural heritage is also very present, as evidenced by the farmhouses, laundries, chapels and oratories.
As for lovers of wild fauna, they will be particularly spoiled in the Alpilles: nearly 250 species of birds live here, including the eagle of Bonelli, the Lesser Kestrel, the Egyptian vulture and the eagle owl. Suitable for outdoor activities, the park will also delight sports enthusiasts of climbing or hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. On foot, on horseback or by bike, do not hesitate to explore the many marked trails that mark out this superb Provencal territory!
The Vallée des Baux olive-growing AOC, which concerns the production of black and green olives and very high-quality olive oil, is present in around 70% of the territory, with nearly 350,000 olive trees and ten or so mills olive groves, real curiosities for tourists and gourmets, who will also appreciate other famous local productions such as goat cheese and honey.
