Abbey of Saint Michel de Frigolet
The Abbey of Saint-Michel de Frigolet is an abbey of premonstrated canons, located near Barbentane in the Montagnette.
Isolated in a very beautiful wild valley in the middle of pines, olive trees and cypresses, it takes its name from ferigoulo, thyme in Provençal language. The abbey has two monastic inns, a bookshop and a restaurant. The Romanesque Saint- Michel church dates from the 12th century and was restored in the 19th century.
The Romanesque structure of the 12th century chapel, Notre- Dame du Bon Remède, is hidden beneath a Baroque decoration of 17th century woodwork and paintings. The basilica of the Immaculate Conception in neo-Gothic style, was consecrated in 1866.
The interior of the large nave is entirely covered with oil murals on the model of the Sainte Chapelle in Paris. The cloister of pure Romanesque style dates from the 12th century and was altered in the 17th century.
