Summer Holidays
In the 14th century, the town erected over 1200 meters of fortifications, with guards patrolling the battlements and three gates providing access to the town. The main gate was equipped with a drawbridge that allowed crossing the moat below. Unfortunately, between 1750 and 1900, the fortifications were constantly dismantled, either to allow the village to expand or simply to recover the stones. Today, only three towers and 300 meters of walls remain.
The village square is literally the heart of the town. The shade provided by the plane trees offers a pleasant atmosphere, where people sit on benches to relax or toss a coin into the local fountain. It’s also where the market sets up its stalls every Friday morning. Many restaurants and cafés have their terraces here, where customers enjoy a refreshing drink or a hearty meal.

Want to escape the rain? The village of Eyragues is home to the "Témoignage & Patrimoine" museum. Inside, you’ll find various reconstructions of scenes from another time, religious and everyday objects, clothing and costumes, pharmaceutical or scientific items, toys... And of course, photographs, some of the objects on display dating back to the 18th century.
If you want to stroll and enjoy the sunshine, try the Parc des Poètes, one of the village's most recent renovations, having opened its doors in 2016. Located at the entrance to the village, this small park allows you to walk among fragrant flowers. Well-known and appreciated by locals, it now houses a collection of busts and statues, scattered throughout the park, featuring some of the most famous Provençal writers and poets, including a life-sized statue of Frédéric Mistral, Nobel Prize in Literature in 1904.

The golf courses in Provence offer unique settings. The one in Les Baux, nestled in the heart of the Alpilles, stands out for its spectacular views. In Mouriès, Servane captivates with its tranquility between mountains and pine trees. In Avignon, the course combines history and quality, while Pont Royal, designed by Seve Ballesteros, presents a challenging experience in the heart of the region. These locations are must-visits for golf enthusiasts in Provence.
Places to Visit in Eyragues
Among the things to see in Eyragues, the Saint-Maxime Church is a must. The various mills, including the olive oil mill, are also interesting to visit. You can also enjoy the typical Provençal landscapes, with olive groves and surrounding vineyards.
Family Holidays
The Saint Maxime Church was built in the 12th century, though the building has been regularly modified. For instance, the bell tower was added in the 17th century, and the choir dates back to 1848. The traces of a fortified terrace are still visible, and rumor has it that it dates back to the Albigensian Crusade (1209-1229). The Renaissance-style Chapel of Christ houses a magnificent painting of the Crucifixion. But the most impressive feature is the ceiling: while the symbols engraved there seem identical, they are actually all unique. A perfect little visit for a small group looking to escape the heat!
Romantic Getaway
If you or your partner are interested in ancient history, be sure to visit the Chapel of Notre-Dame-du-Pieux-Zèle, more commonly known as the Chapel of Saint-Bonnet (though that’s the name of the hermitage). Built in the 11th century, the building was later remodeled in the 17th and 19th centuries. Initially named Notre-Dame-de-La-Pucelle, its name was changed in 1757, as it was deemed too risqué. One of its most interesting details is the wall engraving depicting Adam, Eve, the serpent, and the tree of knowledge. Curiously, the tree is actually a fig tree (contrary to the more common depiction as an apple tree). Next to it is the hermitage. Occupied until 1830, many Paleo-Christian style sarcophagi (an art style dating from 200-500 AD) were discovered there.
Vacation with Your Dog
The Chemin de la Transhumance is a long 13-kilometer walk. Winding over a gravel path, the trail leads you through a wooded area, along a canal, and to various viewpoints over fields and valleys. Since it is a loop reserved for pedestrians and cyclists, you won’t have to worry about your companion being endangered by motorists. Plus, they’ll have plenty of space to run around.

Eyragues: History, Traditions, and Culture
Eyragues derives its name from the corrupted Latin “aira aguae,” meaning “water area,” a clear reference to the numerous marshes that once existed in the area. When the Romans arrived, they encountered two distinct tribes already living on these lands: the Cavares and the Salyens. Under the influence of these invaders and thanks to the many roads they built, the two Celtic groups managed to emerge from their isolation and form alliances with neighboring tribes. The first written mention of the village after Roman times dates back to 1094, under the name “Airaga.” In terms of traditions, the people of Eyragues can boast an impressive feat in the region: they have the oldest still-active bull-running game that bears their village’s name. Called “Encierros à l’Eyraguaise,” it involves tying a bull with a rope around its neck before letting it roam semi-freely through the village streets, challenging those brave enough to approach it. However, this practice is increasingly restricted due to concerns for the bull’s health and well-being (note that this sport is not a corrida, and the bull is not killed at the end). Each year, Eyragues celebrates two particular saints with large festivals: Saint Eloi and Saint Symphorien. These festivals feature games, celebrations, and bull races, both inside and outside the local arenas.
