Alleins: History, Tradition, and Culture

The history of Alleins is, unfortunately, written in blood. As early as the 2nd century BC, the Roman strategist Caius Marius, uncle of the future Julius Caesar, used this location to rest his troops. Later, a fortification, probably made of wood, was built to protect the inhabitants. But in April 1545, during the persecutions of the Vaudois in southern France, the village was ravaged by the troops of Paulin de La Garde: the lands were forcibly confiscated from their former owners, and those who resisted were massacred. But the village survived under the watchful eye of Marquis Renaud. Proud of its heritage and identity, Alleins patiently waited for the French Revolution to shine once more and reclaim the lands lost for over a century. Culturally, religion has played an important role in the commune, as evidenced by the three Catholic churches still in operation today and the many other religious buildings, sculptures, and engravings found throughout the village.
