Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

St Remy 1 | Time in Provence

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is above all an authentic small town in Provence, with its boulevards shaded by plane trees, where it is good to stroll and live to the rhythm of the Provencal art of living on the terraces of cafes and restaurants. Beautiful shops, numerous art galleries, crafts and gourmet products punctuate the old center, composed of pedestrian alleys and small squares decorated with fountains.

From Place Jean Jaurès to the gates of the old town, there is a succession of private mansions, often converted into a museum or art gallery, convents, chapels, and sumptuous 17th and 18th century residences.

The beauty of its landscapes and the quality of its light have inspired many artists, writers and painters.

Vincent Van Gogh, fascinated by the light and the fiery beauty of the landscapes, painted more than 150 paintings in the countryside surrounding Saint Rémy de Provence, a period considered to be major in his work. A walk on the places painted by the artist will allow you to discover the mountain of St Rémy, the fields of wheat and poppies, the olive trees and the cypresses.

City of art and history, Saint Rémy de Provence is built on one of the oldest archaeological sites in Europe. The remains of the ancient city of Glanum, founded in the 3rd century BC and altered by the Romans under Julius Caesar, bear impressive witness to the successive civilizations. You can visit the large thermal baths, the long residential avenue, the temple and the natural source of a true Gallo-Roman city dating from 30 to 10 years BC. Two important monuments are visible near the site: the Arc de Triomphe and the Mausoleum of the Antiques.
