Les Baux de Provence
Built on a rocky outcrop in the heart of the Alpilles, at 245m above sea level, the Citadel of Baux de Provence overlooks exceptional landscapes and offers breathtaking panoramas of the Alpilles massif, the Crau plain swept by the mistral and the Camargue. It is classified and labeled “one of the most beautiful villages in France”.
The Saint-Vincent Church, the Post Tenebras Lux window, the Maison du Roy, the Chapel of the White Penitents, the Castle …. 22 monuments are classified as historical heritage and bear witness to a prestigious and tumultuous past.
At each corner of the picturesque calades which crisscross the old village, architectural masterpieces are worth a look: restored old houses, beautiful Renaissance facades and some magnificent private mansions that welcome for most art galleries and museums. During your stroll, you will come across numerous artisan workshops and shops selling Provençal products.
On its steep rock, the Château des Baux, a true medieval stronghold, stretches with all its majesty over 7 hectares. An audio-guided tour tells you the secrets of the place as well as the chaotic history of the Lords of Baux. Events and shows are organized and allow all generations to relive the epic history of the place: catapult shooting, crossbow shooting, medieval duel, days of little knights and pony rides…
Les Baux de Provence is also three Protected Origin of Origin “Vallée des Baux-de-Provence” for broken olives, pitted black olives and olive oil that can be tasted during the visit the oil mills still in operation. A thematic circuit “Strolling among the Olive Trees” is offered by the Alpilles Regional Natural Park. Lovers of organic wines will be delighted to learn that 85% of the terroir of PDO les Baux de Provence is cultivated in organic or biodynamic agriculture, and many of these areas offer tours and tastings.
